Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Safari

Crowned by the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak at 5,895 meters, Kilimanjaro National Park is one of Tanzania's most iconic destinations. In 1987, UNESCO declared Kilimanjaro a World Heritage Site due to its uniqueness. Rising abruptly from the open plains, capped by snow and frequently fringed by clouds, it is one of the classic images of Africa.

Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano with three distinct peaks: Kibo, the highest peak at 5,895 meters, covered by snow throughout the year despite being located near the equator; Mawenzi at 5,149 meters, a rugged peak open for technical climbs; and Shira at 3,962 meters, the oldest peak that collapsed to form the Shira Plateau, offering outstanding scenic beauty.

What makes this park truly special is its remarkable ecological diversity. As you ascend, you travel through five distinct climate zones — from lush montane rainforest at the lower slopes, through heath and moorland, then alpine desert, and finally to the arctic summit zone. The montane forest, which encircles the mountain from about 1,800 to 2,800 meters, is exceptionally beautiful and supports several plant species, including endemic ones like Impatiens kilimanjari.

The park harbors more than 179 bird species and 140 species of mammals. Hikers may encounter black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, forest duikers, and small mammals like the endemic Myosorex zinkii. At higher altitudes, the white-necked raven, lammergeyer, and alpine chat are common sights.

Even if you're not climbing to the summit, a day trip on the mountain's lower slopes is rewarding. Activities include nature walks through the montane forest, visiting the spectacular Lauwo waterfall, and exploring the Maundi Crater, which provides panoramic views of Lakes Chala, Jipe, and Nyumba ya Mungu.
